Street Lamp
A street lamp is an artificial source of light on the edge of the road turned on at a certain time during day and night. Lighting is intended to operate throughout the hours of darkness so that it fulfills its safety and security purposes, and enhancing the nighttime environment increasing the Social life. A popular misconception about installing street lamps is that it will automatically make streets safer and reduce crime. It provides a positive assistance to commercial, leisure and tourism activities and can increase pedestrian movement during the peak hours of darkness.
The old street lighting systems, and occasionally new ones, are operated by a time clock. This is one of the advantage because all lights are turned on and off at the same time, giving the system a uniform appearance during that time of day. And it will turn the lights on and off at exactly the same time of day regardless of atmospheric conditions such as clouds or fog.
Modern street lamps may also have light-sensitive photocells to turn them on at dusk and off at dawn, or activate automatically in dark weather. It is also not uncommon for street lamps to be on posts which have wires strung between them, such as on telephone poles or utility poles. The electricity supply to a streetlight is not metered in the normal way, energy charges are based on a special metering system operated by the County Council and the Energy Supplier and this system measures a small sample of lighting, so switch on and switch off must be carefully controlled and this is achieved by the use of photoelectric cells. They use high quality electronic components and one feature of the cell is that when its life is expired it fails so that the lamp stays switched on. Today, street lamps commonly uses high-intensity discharge lamps, often HPS high pressure sodium lamps. Street lamps provide the greatest amount of Photopic illumination for the least consumption of electricity.
The lighting characteristics and systems of the power energy-saving type street lamps, which consist of, white light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and a solar cell and battery system. These prototype street lamps has been constructed by two LED light sources, each of which includes a total of 700 units of 10 cd -class white LEDs. The white LED lighting system is divided into three components, which are the control, the electric-power supply and LED lighting divisions.
