Hurricane Lamp
Generally hurricane lamp was an oil-burning lamp with a glass chimney designed to protect the flame from drafts or winds. These hurricane lamps are still very popular today because of their basic practicality during periods of power outages and for use anywhere that has no electricity, such as camping, etc.
The original hurricane lamps, which used either a candle or wicked oil to generate light, were designed with a glass chimney to protect the flame. The hurricane lamp can be any lamp or even a candle including an electric lamp where the flame or light bulb is enclosed by a glass chimney. The modern electric version of the hurricane lamp does not need the glass chimney for functionality but lamp manufacturers still include them in order to retain the hurricane lamps. Glass chimneys are available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, clear, etchings and decorations as well as colors. In addition to this glass chimney, most of the hurricane lamps have an additional decorative glass top, which surrounds the glass chimney.
A hurricane lamp is a light source fueled by a candle, various kinds of oil or in modern times by electricity. The base of the hurricane lamp can be made from a variety of materials like brass, bronze, tin, steel and glass or ceramics. At present brass seems to be the preferred type of base on hurricane lamps because of the durability of metal. The main reason for using brass base is it will not split or break should the lamp be dropped. It holds up for many years without any seeping or leaking. The advantage of these bases over the steel-painted bases is that brass never rusts. Present brass hurricane lamps can be fueled by a number of sources such as kerosene, lamp oil, liquid paraffin and citronella oil. The majority of oil hurricane lamps are constructed with a knob with which to control the level of light. They are also available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and styles.
One can decorate hurricane lamps with a little paint, a rubber stamp and some greenery. In order to decorate these lamps first make sure the surface of the lamp is clean. Then dip or apply paint to decorative surface of stamp. After that press onto the glass surface, then rock back and forth to apply evenly. Depending on thickness of application allow it to dry completely. Later place a candle and hurricane lamp in oasis saucer. Next arrange greenery around the edges of saucer until oasis is completely covered. We can use hurricane lamps in decorating purpose.
