The job of a rehabilitation counselor is to mainly convince the disabled person that it is not a serious grievance and he is not the only one who is suffering with such an ailment. This c\type of counseling has to be done tactfully as the patient with such problems swing in various moods. These disabled clients may have been affected from birth, or a traumatic accident, or prolonged illness. The rehabilitation counselor has to consider three aspects of an individual like their personal, social, and vocational lives.
The rehabilitation counselors have to slowly evaluate and assess the patient’s strengths and weakness. The weakness should never be kindled and the strengths should be enhanced frequently. This in turn acts as a great strength to balance. Similarly, depending on the need of the individual, other referrals like facilitating certain personal and vocational counseling can be initiated. Making arrangements for additional medical care and job placement is another unique technique in the career of a rehabilitation counselor.
Subsequently, a rehabilitation counselor has to take into account the pros and cons of the treatment and takes steps accordingly. Preparing a comprehensive plan of action to ensure that the course of action is implemented without hurting or disappointing anybody is another step in the career of a rehabilitation counselor. The major goal of a rehabilitation counselor is to regulate the progress of the rehabilitation of the patient. Success is realized only when the client develops job skills without dependency and handles it without any sort of stress.
The advancement in the medical field has kept the death rate controlled. This is significant as the senior citizens population continues to increase disproportionately. This has given a demand for rehabilitation counselors. Rehabilitation counselor is allowed to continue his career provided he obtains an license. The first level is obtaining an undergraduate degree.
Generally, these degrees are awarded to graduates who study the fields of rehabilitative services, psychology, sociology or other human services. The next level of learning is the master's degree. Master's degree can be earned when an individual completes almost two years of additional study. Adding to these 600 hours of practical study is compulsorily required to profess a career as a rehabilitation counselor.
The career of rehabilitation counselor requires recommendations and license. Often the degrees earned are taken into accord. Yet, the heave of serving people and solving their problems is an interest developed on own. This career can be pursued only if one is keen in serving people sincerely.
