Sleeping is an important activity in human life. After working very hard, one needs to sleep well in the night. An average person needs to sleep about 7 to 8 hours to keep his body and mind fresh. Sound sleeping in the night provides much needed rest to all organs. Sleeping is very important for proper working of the body systems like nerves system, blood circulation, respiratory systems and digestive system. Insufficient sleeping leads to many physical and physiological problems.

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder that causes insufficient sleeping. People who suffer from insomnia symptom face trouble in falling asleep. They wake-up many times during the night and can not return to sleep afterwards. Some people wake up very early in the morning. Such people do not feel refreshed even after sleeping 7 to 8 hours. 

Depression is believed to be the main cause for insomnia. Other insomnia symptom like heart disorders, kidney ailments, respiratory disorders, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, hyperthyroidism also causes insomnia. Excessive consumption of coffee and tea and exposure to emotional stress and anxiety can also result in insomnia.

There are different types of insomnia like Transient insomnia that lasts from one night to several weeks. A person affected by Transient insomnia gets cured within a week’s time. Suffering is minor when compared to other types of insomnia. Intermittent insomnia is short term insomnia but comes and goes regularly.

This type of insomnia last for a short period goes afterwards and again comes after some time. Chronic insomnia is the worst type among all other types of insomnia. It lasts minimum three nights and can go up to one of more months also. People who are affected by this type of insomnia are the worst sufferers.

There are many ways to treat Insomnia Disorder. The first step in the treatment of insomnia is conducting proper diagnosis and removing all physical and emotional barriers. The other step includes creating proper atmosphere which allows sound sleeping.

Insomnia can be treated by adopting different behavioral techniques like sleep restriction therapy, body and mind relaxation therapy, bright light therapy and reconditioning therapy. Some insomnia patents indulge in taking sleeping pills to get sleeping, but it is the worst method and creates problem in the long run.

Sleep restriction therapy puts restrictions on sleeping times to insomniac patients to make them sleep sufficiently at the right time. Under this type of treatment the patients are forced to sleep on the sleeping time, other times they will have only restricted sleeping.

Relaxation therapy enables to reduce the body tension and anxiety which is the main cause of insomnia. Stretching and yoga exercises are adopted to relax the mind and body. Relaxation therapy consumes good time and efforts before curing insomnia.

Reconditioning therapy involves restricting the insomniac patients from using the bed only for sleeping and not for other activities like reading, eating and playing cards, etc. This is one of the natural ways of solving insomniac problems

Under bright light therapy the insomniac patient is made to sleep in the night at the proper time and a bright light is exposed in the morning in front of him. This makes the patient to wake-up at the right time. When doing this regularly, if the patient is exposed a brighter light in the evening, he will not sleep until the regular sleeping time arrives.
