Insomnia in Children

Insomnia Definition: Insomnia means the sleeping disorder or problem with adequate sleep at night. Insomnia is one of the most common disorders found in adults as well as elderly persons. The causes of the Insomnia may be various, depending on one’s lifestyle, eating habits, work load at the job or home fronts. Except in some exclusive cases, the problem of insomnia is considered to be of short term only, ranging from a few days to a few weeks at the most. Of course, some chronic kind of insomnia is reported of lasting for some more periods – counted in years perhaps. That type of insomnia disorder may lead to some very serious consequences like extended deficiency of sleep with its intrinsic dangers and discomforts.   

Symptoms of Insomnia in Children: In the current times, children have also been reported to have sleeping trouble or Insomnia in many countries. If a child passes consecutive nights in the restless state, wakes up in the morning with irritable moods or is not feeling refreshed then it is for sure that he or she is trapped in the insomnia disorder. Such children need immediate medical intervention to prevent further damage to their health. In case of an adult suffering from insomnia, its difficult tracing the exact reason behind, but in the case of a child, the parents should minutely observe his activities to find the loop hole and correct it for curing the child on priority.

Possible Common Causes of Insomnia in Children: However, a few of the most common possibilities that might cause insomnia in children even should be evaluated or checked seriously: Stress > like adults, the children may also suffer from stress that leads to insomnia. If your child is passing sleepless nights, check his life thoroughly such as how is doing at his school or is his household passing through any financial or marital problems, or is the child being harassed by some unsocial in the vicinity, or is he bothered of your problems of any kind, something of this sort may perhaps be puzzling the child which in turn might have led him to the sleepless nights or just say the insomnia. Constipation > Even the upset tummy or constipation should not be easily ruled out as such problems too may cause insomnia. In the adult such symptoms have proved to be the cause of insomnia, so better check out whether your child is eating and passing stools properly.

Pain: Check whether the child is complaining of any types of pain in his body as Fibromyalgia may strike accidentally in children too as an adult. Some common problems such as growing pains, or muscle cramps due to the sports day activities, or playing for longer time, may be the reason for the Insomnia in Children. Lastly just try to check out Sleep Disturbers > like sleep apnea and restless legs, bad dreams, bed wetting or fear of doing so, grinding the teeth during sleep, asthma or heartburns etc. The check list may be longer, but try to check them thoroughly to get your child relieved from insomnia. After trying these entire if the symptoms does not improve, then try to shower some extra love and affection on your child and pamper him a bit for getting asleep, perhaps it might work positive, who knows!
