To find out the exact cause it is important to narrow down in terms of the location of the pain. First figure out where does it exactly hurt. For example the axial lower back pain hurts precisely in the lower back without spreading into nearby area. It normally gets over on its own. Most of the people get rid of it within six weeks. The radicular lower back pain starts from the lower back and spreads towards the thighs and both the legs. This can be cured by exercises and medication. One more type is the lower back pain with referred pain where it spreads from the lower back to the buttocks and the upper thighs. This would normally not travel below the knee.

Apart from the location the type of the feeling is also a criteria. Some times the pain increases by doing a specific type of an activity for example playing football or lifting a heavy load etc. The pain sometimes worsens when the body is put in some specific position like doing a writing work on the desk with the head bent down or sitting in the car in an uncomfortable position.

Releasing the body from such awkward position or giving it some rest may reduce the back pain.

Some times the pain is deep and continuous irrespective of the activity, movement or position. The pain may seem to feel like pins and needles. The severe pain excruciates more in the calf and the lower back. It may also occur at specific times only. The migratory pain does not have a specific spot. It may occur at a point for once and than at the other place the next time.
