Cooking always seems to be a chore to those who are new to the concept of cooking. However it is comforting to them to learn that if it is possible for one to read a book, it is possible to cook too. The main thing is that you should know some kitchen basics, know which recipes to choose and some cooking tips to help along the way.
An important cooking tip is to choose a recipe that is not complicated when you first start cooking. If you choose an exorbitant recipe with unusual ingredients and steps, you are sure to get confused. It is better to try one or two pot dishes. Once you choose the right dish, read through the recipe from the beginning to end before cooking. Make sure you have all the ingredients, utensils and appliances required to cook.
Before starting any cooking, it is important that you understand the directions for cooking. This is to avoid any confusions and failure in cooking. Take a look at the time and decide if you have enough time to complete the recipe. Some recipes take lots of time to complete; so if you don’t intend to spend lots of time in the kitchen, make sure you choose the right recipe that does not need too much time for preparation.
If dinner has to be ready within a stipulated time, make sure you calculate the best time to start cooking to have the meal ready on time. Most of the recipes found in cook books mention the amount of time that is required to cook the dish. However if you are cooking for the first time, make sure you add ten to fifteen minutes to the mentioned time, to be safer and on time with your cooking.
While cooking you can save lots of time as well as cook much better if, you assemble all your ingredients before cooking. Keep ingredients ready, and all the utensils and spoons required to cook the dish. Don’t forget an apron as it helps keep your clothes clean. Of course, the chef’s hat is not necessary, but it’s better to tie back long hair.
Before you cook any dish, make it a habit to wash your hands with warm water and soap. You may also have to wash hands repeatedly while cooking; especially if you use raw meat, fish, poultry and egg products. Some people have a habit of placing ready to serve food on the same plates, counters and surface raw food was placed. This is not a good habit as the germs of the uncooked food can pass to the cooked food. Always wash these preparation surfaces with hot and soapy water before placing cooked food on it.
Cooking is a vast subject with different countries having different forms of cooking. So if you wish to introduce some variety in your dishes; and the best places to look for a variety of recipes are cookbooks, magazines, the internet, newspapers, supermarkets, cooking class and friends. As mentioned before, if you intend to try new recipes, choose the easier and faster recipes first.
